Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the UCSF School of Medicine, with nearly 1,000 faculty in 16 specialties. Many digital leaders at UCSF are DOM faculty members, including the heads of Health Informatics, the Center for Digital Health Innovation, and CTSI. The Clinical Informatics fellowship is led by DOM faculty, and there are several digitally-oriented centers, including the Center for Clinical Informatics and Improvement Research (CLIIR) and SOLVE, which focuses on digital health equity. At least 50 DOM faculty have digital transformation as a key focus.

Using EHR Audit Logs to Capture Contextual Contributors to Diagnostic Performance

This study leverages the use of a novel yet widely-available source of EHR data to capture contextual dimensions of diagnostic assessment (including clinical decision-making, clinical team structure and clinical processes) from three health systems (UCSF, Stanford and Kaiser Permanente Northern California). By identifying key contextual factors that contribute to diagnostic performance, this work offers insights to improve the efficiency of diagnostic processes and reduce errors.

An Ensemble of Neural Networks Provides Expert-Level Prenatal Detection of Complex Congenital Heart Disease

A team led by cardiologist Rima Arnaout discovered a way to double doctors’ accuracy in detecting the vast majority of complex fetal heart defects in utero – when interventions could either correct them or greatly improve a child’s chance of survival – by combining routine ultrasound imaging with machine-learning computer tools.
